The “Miracle on McClay"
Adopt-A-Family started more than 30 years ago and was originally held on the site of our first official address. Although the program's event is so large it must now be held at the St. Charles Community College campus, it is still fondly referred to as the “Miracle on McClay."
Providing many of our integrated services, the Adopt-A-Family program not only assures that parents with children and the elderly will have Christmas by providing them with food and gifts, but also that they receive basic need items and assistance throughout the year.
For the annual event, the Care Service coordinates the adoption of more than 700 families in need by neighbors, local organizations, social groups, churches, schools and businesses. The process begins in the fall by signing up families who request to be adopted. In October, we begin matching the families with those individuals and groups who wish to adopt them.
Donations are requested for shoe certificates, bicycles, Christmas trees, clothing and other gifts, which we use to supplement families' gift packages. All families and adopters are matched by Thanksgiving and the event takes place over a three-day weekend in December.
Want to Adopt?
If you choose to adopt a family, you will be provided with the first name of each family member as well as their age and wish list. You will be asked to provide at least three gifts for each family member or as many as you would like in addition to that. All gifts should be wrapped and individually marked with the name of the family member for whom it is intended. You may choose the size of the family you wish to adopt, ranging in size from single persons to families of twelve.
You will also be asked to provide Christmas dinner, which should include a gift certificate for the dinner or a gift certificate for meat plus your choice of boxed side dishes that you think would make for a nice Christmas dinner. In addition, staple foods, paper products, cleaners, and personal care items are always in need if you have the means to provide them. These suggestions are necessities that many of our families cannot purchase with food stamps and therefore go without.

Working Toward Sustainability
One of the main functions of the Adopt-a-Family program is to ensure that the families who are in the program have a sustainable living environment. With over 700 families being accepted into the program on an annual basis, the Care Service ensures that each family receives a home visit months before the actual adoption process has started. The significance of these home visits is that an assessment is being made by a social service professional, who then identifies obstacles for the family to reach self-reliance that may exist in the home. Home visits give the social service professionals an idea of the safety and security in the home, and allow for our program to help provide these things that the adoption does not cover. Often to meet the needs of a family it takes all year. For example: our RHRH program works on homes nearly all year, starting before the adoption and ending months after it is over. The family’s needs are substantiated by the home visits, rather than just their “wish list” to Santa for gifts.
Want to Help?
Volunteers are needed the Saturday of the Adopt-A-Family Weekend for numerous assignments such as receiving, wrapping, and sorting of gifts. Volunteers are also needed for the weeks and months preceding Adopt-A-Family Weekend to hold and promote drives for supplemental items such as for new and used bikes, certificates for children's shoes and coats and new or gently used Christmas trees.
